Reflection Letter to Dr. H. on the Process
Dear Dr. H.:
This project has opened my mind to vast possibilities for teaching literacy and language arts. At first, I was very scared of the project because it had so many parts and formats that I had never worked with before. But, once I got going, I couldn’t keep myself away. I hope that I have lived up to your expectations and look forward to your comments and those of my peers.
Learning how to work with the Weebly web site builder took a lot of time and many erasers thrown across the room, as evidenced by several pink or other colored smudges on the walls. At one point, I had thought that I had lost my double-voice poem during design editing and I almost wept. Luckily, I knew how these things happen and I kept two copies of the web page up, one that is open for editing and one that is the resultant web page. I just happened to have that poem displayed on the uneditable web page. I quickly printed it and then proceeded to spend forty-five minutes on the design of the page before finally giving up and going back to the original desgin. All that fuss and worry, and nothing came of it, except that I decided to copy each and every page to MS Word as a back-up. This also helped in the writing process. It felt much safter to write my original piece in MS Word and then re-type or copy it to the web page. Adding the multimedia was incredibly fun and a little frustrating, but I am very pleased with the results. I can now make web pages, at least I can using Weebly. As for “evidence of process efforts”, I have included a section on “The Making of a Multigenre Literacy Site”. I took pictures during the building of the website. I do not have drafts of my writing pieces. I am a “stream of conciousness” writer and rarely have drafts, especially considering the short formats.
This is a website that I enjoy visiting. If I like it, it's possible that someone else will, too. Maybe a lot of someone elses.
A writer writes for themselves first. But, what makes a good writer, is that what they write has universal appeal and is relevant to many people on many levels.
This is what we are lacking in the teaching profession. Teachers forget to teach themselves the way they would like to be or wish they had been taught.
I hope that you enjoyed visiting my web page as much as I have enjoyed making it. Thank you ever so much for this wonderful opportunity to learn and create! I continue to be impressed with how little I know about teaching and look forward to every new course in the NCSU MAT program with fond anticipation and enthusiasm.
Sincerely,
Shannon M. Turner
