T.V. or Not T.V. That is the Question...
Discussion with Anne McCaffrey about adapting her books to the movie and television screen.
Interviewer: I understand that a T.V show based on your Dragonriders of Pern series is being written.
Anne: Yes. Finally, the technology has nearly caught up to the imagination and my dragons can be portrayed as I envisioned them.
Interviewer: That's wonderful! Are there any other holdups to the project?
Anne: Sadly, yes there are. The director has fired the first batch of writers because they trided to make it into "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" in space.
Interviewer: And that's a bad thing? "Buffy" has an immense fanbase and is considered a television masterpiece.
Anne: Be that as it may. That is NOT how I want my dragons and their riders to be seen. There is so much more to it than just the moments of adventure. The society, the history, the land itself are all major participants in the world of Pern.
Interviewer: Thank you for your time, Ms. McCaffrey and I do hope to see a screen adaptation of your series in the future!
Anne: You're welcome. But, don't hold your breath. So far, modern television has not been willing to make concessions to convey the lives of my Dragonriders as they are meant to be.
